As with the great Beta Max vs. VHS debate of the 80’s, it looks as if the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray debate will come down to which format the porn industry decides to use. In the 80’s, the porn industry chose to do everything in VHS format and Beta Max quickly became obsolete. If the porn industry chooses HD DVD, look for Blu-Ray to go the way of Beta Max.

When ever I pose this theory to people, I get the same reaction: no way will the porn industry dictate what all the other movie companies will use. And I say they will. Think about how many movies a year the porn industry puts out (no pun intended). It’s a ton. If they pick the HD DVD format, then the makers of HD DVD can achieve economies of scale. The more HD DVD’s they make, the cheaper it becomes to make them. Then HD DVD has a competitive edge on Blu-Ray in price.  Suddenly, that copy of Good Will Hunting that was $25 is now $13.

And all thanks to the porn industry wanting to crank out Good Will Humping on HD DVD instead of Blu-Ray.
