David Beckham is coming across the pond to play MLS.
Woo. Hoo.
I can only think of two reasons why he’s coming over here (besides the $250M).
1) He and his wife are fading in popularity in England, so they’ve decided to come to LA in hopes to stay relevant in the publics mind.
2) Beckham’s skills have slipped and he’s come to MLS to extend his career. He’s probably no longer the best player in Europe anymore. He may not even be in the top 5. So he sees his chance to extend his career by coming to the US. He’ll obviously be the best player in MLS, since American soccer players are not as good as Europeans. Keep in mind that I’ve based all this on my seeing one MLS shootout and a couple of World Cup games. Clearly, my knowledge of soccer players in America is extensive.
I guess my point is this: I still don’t care about MLS.

He *claims* he’s not doing it for the money, but it probably is part of it.
As for the two reasons: yep. He stopped showing up as a daily feature on the BBC about two years ago. The tabloids there really only do anything about them when they have another child or do something really stupid (like procreate… oh wait…). But he really isn’t the most important.
Key to all of this is that the new England manager, Steve McClaren, left Beckham off the England squad. He went from being team captain (albeit not a very good one) to a non-entity.
People in the US know of Becks, though, and it will greatly enhance soccer’s popularity. He’s likely not as good as many US players, but he’ll be a star (and that’s what he’s used to) regardless of what he does.
He can’t accept getting older and not being the star… so why not move where he can still be one?
Plus, it’s LA, and Posh can be as posh as she wants and keep dressing him up as the Ken doll he is.
